Dear Editor,
The global impact of TB as a major infectious disease
remains highly significant. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatments, leading to a successful cure for
most TB patients, many experience enduring tissue or
physical damage due to the disease. Post-TB lung
disease (PTLD) is defined by ‘evidence of chronic respiratory abnormality, with or without symptoms,
attributable at least in part to previous tuberculosis’.1
As of 2020, there are an estimated 155 million TB
survivors worldwide, of whom 18–87% may be affected by PTLD.2,3 China has a significant burden of
TB, with an estimated 7.1% of global cases in 2022.4
This suggests that there are a significant number of TB
survivors at risk of PTLD. However, there is limited
epidemiological and clinical data on PTLD in China.
We therefore conducted a cross-sectional study at a
specialist hospital for TB in Southwest China, to assess
the clinical features and chest imaging related to
PTLD. We also sought to understand the determinants
linked to hospitalisation to address future diagnostic
and therapeutic requirements.
